Ride to Naukunchiatal

Sometime back, not too far in time was a couple who had gone to a resort at Kullu, along with some friends over the weekend. (Dramatic opening...read on for some more...) They were enjoying themselves to the hilt doing river rafting, trekking, playing volleyball in the lap of nature when suddenly there was roar which stopped every one in their tracks and had everyone running towards the direction from which the sound was coming. Lo Behold! There was this group of riders on their machines, thumping off to scale the heights of Himalayas. And all of a sudden everything around him changed ...his whole life seemed worthless. In a flash the sense of happiness & contentment changed into a saddening hollowness. To the utter astonishment of his wife who could not believe as to what burden came upon him that he had become such a brooding spoil sport. He could not believe that he had owned a similar machine for three years but had never been able to enjoy a ride full of adventures of such proportions.

And so they came back and started off with their mundane lives, but all along he was having this craving to be on the road with his machine ...riding his Enfield through forested ranges, foggy crests, lush meadows, winding rivers, moon-like ravines just for the sheer pleasure of riding. And one day while brooding alone in the office cafeteria, like an angel to a troubled soul walked in his Project Manager (Raj). The skills and experience of people management were put to action and very soon Raj knew what was troubling him. Happy to know that the reason was not due to discontentment with work/office, Raj and he formulated a plan over a cup of coffee. As Raj too was a proud owner of a Thunderbird and was harboring similar dreams, very soon a call was sounded to gather fellow enthusiasts. A trip was planned for the coming weekend. The destination unknown...a true sign of a biking enthusiast.

Colleagues Vijay (a veteran rider) and Harish agreed to join them. With them they brought their vast experience and knowledge of the limitations of the machines, handling a bike breakdown, riding in a formation, the group dynamics and coordination in short, the what-to-do & what-not-to-do of long distance biking. The direction that this group would take was decided on the penultimate day. And so a dream transformed into a plan and that’s how i started out on my first ever adventure on my bike.

Noida - Naukuchiatal - Jim Corbett Reserve - Noida.
Total distance covered 657kms
Time spent riding: 22 hours
Total Time spent: 46 hours

Day 1(Saturday 8th July) 5am

Actually my day had begun even before the previous day's sunset. The anxiety had me awake all through the night. I must have woken up thrice to check the time and if the alarm was on. Finally i reached the venue and was glad to see Vijay and Harish already waiting there. So the plan is on and i am not dreaming again... And very soon Raj joined us. We ran through our checklist and had a quick photo session and then Vijay gave us a brief on how to ride in a group. Experience matters!!!! Then all our engines roared in unison as if a hungry Lion was awake and was readying it self for a kill. So our engines began feasting itself on the roads and we drove off into the sunrise...

The first stop was on a roadside dhaba at Garhmukteshwar for breakfast. Had some traditional parathas and tea. And no sooner had we finished eating we were all eager to hit the road again.

The first great stretch was the NHAI ByPass Road where we had to stop to take some pics of the beautiful countryside. The skies were clear and it seemed as if we had left the seltring heat of Delhi behind. Pics done, it was time to burn the rubber and soon we were thumping again. We took a small halt after crossing Rampur via Moradabad. Then afterwards the landscape was totally different. The roadsides were greener and the air had a certain cleanliness/freshness in it, which only a person living at Delhi could appreciate.

From Bilaspur and via UdhamSingh Nagar we entered PantNagar, the roads of which had foliage around it providing a kind of green tunnel.

Somewhere in the greenery of Pant Nagar and on our way to Haldwani we took a small halt to stretch our legs and had some refreshments ...a cool mint laced freshly grounded sugarcane juice. After Haldwani it seemed as if the foothills of Himalayas had suddenly cropped up out of nowhere and we were slowly climbing up the snaking roads into Kathgodam. Shuffling in between our 2nd and 3rd gears we reached Bhimtal. Having done the plains at speeds of 80-100 kmph, it was all together a different experience driving on roads which suddenly did a 90 degree turn with the rocks on one side and 60 feet deep 'khai' on the other side of the road. It made my head dizzy trying to focus on my driving as well as trying to gauge the depth of these slopes. From Bhimtal we headed off to Naukuchiatal. Upon reaching there i did a run across the circumference of the lake as if to pay obeisance to the lake. A huge Hanuman (god of strength) temple held fort at one end of the lake. From there we headed off on a 45 degree inclined road to finally reach the resort where we would be checking in. At 3pm we finally turned off the ignition of our bikes and stepped on the terra firma. To me it was an experience of a lifetime. A trip across lands and rivers and ravines that i had only read of and had imagined.

After a late lunch every one was out with their cameras and pretty soon Raj was giving us a crash course on professional photography. Photography buff that he is, we had some ‘gyaan’ sessions on the features of our cameras and how to take pictures and not just click pics. The resort that we had checked in was situated on the lake. The lake was actually getting bifurcated on the rock on which this resort steadily stood. Some amazing moments spent in the tranquility of this heavenly place trying to absorb the beauty and serenity of the place. Such is the freshness of the air there that we hardly felt any road-weariness and we all were up and ready for some trekking. Taking an offbeat track we headed off into the hills thinking that we were venturing into a place where no man has venture (ok…. or at least where people rarely go). But alas on top off the hill stood a row of houses and a small make shift dhaba where we went and had tea and had a good laugh at our selves for our failed attempt at being Columbus and Vasco-de-Gama. Amidst that laughter and tea we even checked out the real-estate prospects from the locals there.

Back at the resort all of us had dinner and made plans about what adventure activities we would be doing the following day (like boating, paragliding, etc). And interesting observation was that we all slumped into our beds and were lying on our stomach and not on our backs. Before dozing off we all were discussing on how the first thing that we would do upon reaching home was to modify our bikes seats and were discussing the possibilities of surgically enhancing our behinds to add more cushion to it.

Day Two: 6 am
Opened my eyes to a lovely chilly weather with the pitter-patter of the rain. For a moment I thought I was still dreaming but then the mist from the rain on my face made it all look too real for a dream. What a way to wake up! From the resort officials we came to know that it had been raining the entire night. So a quick meeting was called by Raj to discuss the agenda for the day ahead. Over umpteen cups of tea, it was finally decided that we head to Jim Corbett Falls as the reserve was closed due to the mating season of the tigers. With a beautiful weather like that what else could one do... ;-)

Leaving the tigers to enjoy the season we decide that we could visit the Falls and so out came the rain coats and in went everything into plastic bags (for water proofing). And so the journey began.

It was an experience to drive down the hills the rains. Visibility was low because of the clouds and the rains, the tarmac was slippery and small rivulets of rainwater on the roads were racing with us. We were driving at speeds of 20-30kmph. Many a times i was distracted by the beautiful landscapes, the scenic step-farming with water clogged fields of crops, the clouds below and suddenly the road would take a sharp bend and i would jolt out of my dream and take a vow to keep my eyes on the road only. Well all through the journey on the hills i kept making and breaking such promises. We had stopped somewhere to refuel our machines for the journey back. Due to the incessant rains, water had somehow managed to enter my petrol tank while I was refueling. And then to my utter horror my bike started stalling. Dr Vijay came to the rescue. I told him about my bikes symptoms and the medical history and very soon he diagnosed that it was due to the water in my carburetor. So Dr is that critical or what? I asked. And the Dr replied, nothing to worry about…. just keep revving whenever the engine tries to die out.

And very soon my bike and I were back to normal. So we stopped at some dhaba for breakfast. The tea served at dhabas complemented by the rainy weather had a very rejuvenating and refreshing effect on us. Then we had the usual rounds of paranthas with some more tea. Down from the hills, we entered the plains and congratulated each other for having driven safely thru such difficult terrains. Once on the plains our gears changed and so did our speeds.
We headed off to Jim Corbett Falls. To get a taste of what we were heading for do visit http://www.corbettpark.com/. It was a great thrill to ride through a forest range known for its tigers and elephants. The dark grey road winding its self amidst a thick greenery with strange sounds of birds and insects with the awareness that there could be tigers and other wild cats nearby had our adrenalin flow steady. The way to the falls happens to be amidst some thick foliage and we over shot it by some 2–3 kms and had to turn back. Finally we reached the falls and once again the cameras were out to capture the magic of nature. The tree vines were the size of anacondas. Peeling off our wet clothes we jumped into the cool waters of the fall and spent about half an hour ‘chilling’ out.

After that we were back on the road and headed towards Moradababd via Kashipur. All along the journey we had spells of shower. So the weather made our journey a pleasure. True to Vijays words of wisdom… our enthusiasm was ebbing out and we were more eager to get home, now that the adventure was over. The stoppages were less and we did stretches of 140 km at one go. We stopped at a dhaba for a late lunch and then vrrroommmed to Noida. It was around 10 pm when we entered Noida and was raining.

Seemed like we had gone into the hills to get the rains.
Mission accomplished. We congratulated each other on the fact that we had a journey without a hitch and none of the machines had any breakdowns. And then we parted ways to head to our homes.

Hope to be on the road soon to some unknown destination driving on unknown roads to discover beautiful India along with my Enfield ofcourse!!!!.

Drive To - CORBETT NATIONAL PARK

More Pictures at : http://vijusnn.dotphoto.com ( Folder name Corbett National Park)
Elephant safari is one of the best way to explore forest , and safe . Our expernced
elephant very close to Tiger( 2-5 ) mtr !! Tiger tried to charge ..... Few month s back a tigress attacked a forest department employee .

One photographer from France who was following an owl to make an documentory faced Tiger , instead of avoiding tiger he started taking snaps ... His body was found 2 days later , half eaten . Later this tiger announced as " Man Eater" .

I saw a baby elephant crossing road in dense Grassland , told my guide Mr.Ahamad , he said chase/follow the elephants ..... I accelerated Gypsy to 60 -70 kmph within few seconds ( that too in bad roads of forest ) and reached the elephants . We saw a mother and a baby elephant within 4 -6 feet . Baby elephant was bery cute.

The Team : Left to Right -> me - Thejasvee - Harish - Naveen .

One close view of Fully Grown Tiger . There are 156 tigers in Corbett National Park . Park is devided into 3 zones . Core zone , Buffer zone , tourist zone. This region was famous for Man Eater Tiger .

This is one of the beautiful place in Corbett , few shots of film "KAAL" captured here . This is "RAMGANGA" river , we can see Crocodiles and Alligators here.

RAMGANGA River ...

SLEEPLESS SCARY NIGHTS IN GERAL OLD REST HOUSE : We booked this entire rest house for 4 people. It is an old House , interiors match with British style . None of the doors of this Guest house could stop any animal from entering inside . All windows had sust glass cover and mosquito mesh . Roofs made of thin old wood but coloured well ;) . Next tio this there is one big water source which attracts all sort of animals starting from deer , elephant to Tiger . No electricity here .

Thejasvee can explain the horrible experence very well , since she experenced animal movements next to her. I will update with her explanation in her words within few days. Night we saw two shining eyes from top windows , with constant movements . Some animal was pushing/scratching doors , we can feel the movement of a heavy animal on our wooden roof. We could hear strange sounds from different parts of cottage . We remembered "Man Eaters " and recent attacks inside park . Thejasvee was more scared as she started thinking about animal attack , and other possibilities. She did not sleep till morning , morning we came to know that that was "LEOPARD" !!!

Morning time is advisible for animal spotting , we heard a deer alert call and all of us waiting for Tiger .... I could not see properly as i was in driver s seat , i had to move Gypsy in reverse direction in those narrow roads to get better picture of Tiger.
This is the picture captured by Thejasvee .

Gypsy in dry Ramaganga river ....
In these grassland we chased / followed wild elephants ......

HIMALAYA

Back to Himalaya :
Total Distance : 1400 km
Petrol Burned : 140 Ltr
States : UP , Delhi , Haryana , Panjab , Himachal Pradesh
More Pictures : http://vijusnn.dotphoto.com/CPListAlbums.asp

This snap was taken in Chandigarh , its an artificial lake .

Small baby in Traditional Dress of Himachal

Views of Snow covered Peaks

Himalaya s always Unpredictable , while going to top everything was fine. When we started return journey heavy snow fall started . And thin layer of ice formed on roads , on which driving a vehicle is dengerous .... Every turn, every corner we face chances of death.

This place is not open to visitors , here all shops ( which open for very few months during mansoon) were covered with 15 - 20 feet of heavy snow . BRO ( Border Road Organization - a wing of Indian Army ) mantains these roads . Bro is called as Mountain Tamers - they created and mantaining highest motorable passes in in the world. We could reach this point because of Mr.Vineeth whom we met on the way . This terrain will remain closed for next 2 months .....

This route connects Leh - Ladakh ( Considered as very sinsitive posts of border ) during summer , but now closed . Here all bridges will be removed when snow fall starts , because any bridge will not survive more than 7 days.( daily 15 -20 feet of snow fall ) . Here i am driving through a river !! .... this is the only option available for me to explore ristricted area.

Thanks to Mr. Vineeth who allowed us to enter this area . I came to know about the very tough life of soldier in border , where temperature reaches to -29 degree s sometimes.

One of the reason why i selected GYPSY is it 4 Wheel Drive . When we put GYPSY in 4H n 4L gear it can go any where .... It becomes Mountain Goat !!! It is a all terrain vehicle , a trusted vehicle of Indian army .

Few modifications - its changed such that 2 people can sleep within GYPSY when there is no accomodation is available , ( especially in Himalays) .

I spent total 4 days with mechanic who has 15 years of experence , where i learned repairing vehicle in case of breakdown . It is very much necessary because i wil be going to some places which will be disconnected from rest of the world for many days ...

RIDE FOR RAFTING

" Thrilling action packed white water rafting in Gangetic valley , its irregular powerful violent rapids , freezing water rushing to escape from the captivity of mighty Himalayan mountains , some of the virgin forests of Himalayan range , early morning walk along holy river and riding a 350 cc beast in Himalayan circuits ……. Was one of the unforgettable experience in my life. "

Thanks to Sunny for this snap..

More Picture: http://vijusnn.dotphoto.com/

After having a very close call with death near Roorkee where a Himachal Pradesh Tourism Bus was touching almost all corners of the road at speed of min 80kmph , we reached Rishikesh at 1.00 pm . First view of valley after riding 245 km gave us new enthusiasm . We decided to sleep on river banks of Ganga , hired tents and started planning for next day rafting.

" Adventure for Photography " session in the Morning.

Place we stayed full of shining sand, facing flowing crystal clear water with small ripples .In all directions we could see mountains covered with virgin forests , birds , flowers , here and there few human beings .It was our first evening , most of us left for trekking .When we reached remote villages it was already night so we could not enjoy the trekking fully. Played beach volleyball after that our party started. Bonfire , singing and jokes added additional flavor to this evening.

Me and Sunny decided that we will go for early morning trekking which will be followed by photography session . Morning 6 we left , walking in the direction of water . Walked in mud , climbed few rocks we did many more crazy actions to take few good snaps. When I came back to tent my shoes were totally filled with mud , jacket was covered with wet sand , indirectly it was saying stories of our “ Adventure for Photography “.

Rishikesh is one of the Holy city of India it is 220 km from Delhi , and around 20 km from Haridwar . This “ Yoga Capital of The World” is bisected by Holy Ganga . In this region Ganga is very wild . Best rafting stretch is from Marinedrive to Rishikesh , it around 24 km. In this range we encounter 12 major rapids like Shivpuri , Golf course , roller coaster . Some of them are very risky where water forces rafts up to 8 to 12 feet.

I should appreciate the instructions , warnings given before starting our rafting session . We can apply our physics and fluid dynamics knowledge to real life . We were provided with all safety gears , that built more confidence in those people who don t know swimming. After 10 km of rafting we were little tired , every rapid filled new energy to face one more rapid. Total time taken was almost 4.5 hours . Those 4.5 hours we enjoyed each and every minute. But we could not capture those moments in camera because of water .

Had lunch at 3.30 pm , started to Noida .Night driving was very tough , reached home at 2.00 am midnight as usual with lot of experiences share ……

WILD RIDE - SARISKA NATIONAL PARK

LOST …..

60 Rs in pocket …… all vehicles documents ( RC book , Insurance ) with others …… just 3.5 ltr of petrol in tank ( 3.5 ltr in a Royal Enfield is very less ) ……… yet to cover 160 km ………… have to manage food , petrol , vehicle repair ( if any ) …… “ Chai Pani “ to police ( bribe – for not having vehicle docs ) ….. that too in Rajastan . I experienced such unexpected situation this time while driving to SARISKA NATIONAL PARK. If I don t meet them I will be in trouble in middle Rajastan .

In that 100 km ride I did not take single break , riding continuously at 90 – 110 kmph to catch my gang . All these happened due to a confusion in a turn , they were thinking that I was ahead . They were riding as fast as possible to catch me , I was behind them trying to catch them !!! But there was a time gap of 40 mins between us which stopped us from meeting. After cruising for 1.5 hours without stopping I saw them in a roadside dhaba near Alwar .

I traveled through Karnataka , Tamilnadu , Kerala , Uttar Pradesh , Uttaranchal , Haryana , Himachal Pradesh , Rajastan till today on two wheels , I am just 23 now. My team for Sariska : Vinay , Harish , Shashi Bhushan ( new rider ) , Naveen ( new rider) . 5 of us left to Sariska , Alwar , Siliserh on 4 two wheelers . Started morning at 6.00 am on Saturday 18 / 02 / 2006 . Came back on 20 / 02 / 2006 at 12.10 am midnight .

Road till Alwar reminded me my native place in Costal Karnataka . Refreshing 3 Rs Masala Chai s , friendly villagers , those old hybrid diesel tempo/rickshaw loaded with minimum 25 villagers with their luggage , people with their dirty white traditional dress , small houses made of bricks and decorated with dry grass made our trip memorable . Reached Sariska at 1.30 . Now we were ready for that “ Wild Riding “.

Picture Gallary : http://vijusnn.dotphoto.com

“WILD RIDING “ – 45 km drive inside restricted national park on Royal Enfield .

There is a Mandir inside park , so forest officers allow 2 / 4 wheelers
Till that mandir only on Saturday . While planning we gathered all details about this . Our riding started with lot of warnings of forest guards at the entrance. Stopping / walking in the park is not allowed in park .We were allowed only on particular road , but we took many possible roads !

Presently there are very less tigers in that park , spotting them is a very tough task . But there are considerable number of leopards and other wild animals. On the way to Mandir we had a photo break near a water source , same place we saw big footprints of leopard / big cat while returning ! i think it was watching us , we took few snaps of those footprints. Monkeys / deer were blocking our roads , snaps will explain you very well .
I remembered “ Man Eater s of Tsavo “ ( Africa ) , “Champawat Tiger” by Jim Corbett .

Totally we traveled 45 km from one end to other end , without guide , without any security . 2 pm to 6 pm we roamed inside National Park , I was trying to relate what I red / saw in national geographic channel. Our photographs will explain remaining parts of wild drive.

Night we stayed in Rama Temple next to Sariska . We heard continuously many strange voices made by wild animals and their kill s till morning …

Picture Gallary : http://vijusnn.dotphoto.com/

Day 2 :

Morning we went to Hot water Spring , pigeons were main attractions there . We took many amazing snaps there . Then we had a race , Naveen won the race on his CBZ . We too touched 115 – 120 but at higher speeds , in village roads 150 cc medium weight vehicles have their own advantages .

Then went to Siliserh Lake , had food . Boating was main attraction there . There are many crocodiles still tourism department allows boating in that lake .

Next destination was Alwar fort , its on top of one of the mountain of Aravali Hills . Driving there is a great pleasure . We took some roads full of stones . thrones , glasses and reached a destroyed palace and took few snaps for the record . Out bike ryres had very tough time during this drive . From the top we can have nice view of Alwar City . While coming back i was driving without touching handles for 2-3 kms , turning the vehicle by balancing body weight and angle of inclination was fun.

Then relaxed for 1 hour in a dhaba , and left to delhi . Went to “ KARNATAKA BHAVAN “ for South Indian food . Reached home at 12.15 am midnight on 20/02/2006 .

DESERT RIDE - PUAHKAR

More Pics : http://vijusnn.dotphoto.com/CPViewAlbum.asp?AID=3230957

26 th Jan ,

it was already 7.00 am . Engine roared to life , as usual this thumping sound gave signal to my neighbours that this guy is again going for some crazy ride !! This time our destination was Pushkar estimated distance was 1000 km.

Our first stop was around 90 km from Noida , Sri Krishna Dhaba . On the way we met many beautiful fields with yellow roses ( don t know the name ) . Few photo breaks and again we were on road . TB was cruising at 85-90 kmph effortlessly that too with a pillion rider !! Some times reached 110 kmph too . Total load on wheels was 150 kg + vehicles weight . ( total around 320 kg !)

Near Jaipur we had 3 Rs Masala Chai , I can say that was far better than Chai s served in Raddison Noida ! ( it s a 5 star hotel - MBD )

Reached Ajmeer around 4.00 pm , again stopped for chai . Crowd at that dhaba/shop reminded me that today 26 th Jan . “ KRANTIVEER “ movie was screened there , Nana Patekar was in full flow with his Dialogs and action . We watched last 30 mins of movie n started again .

Reached Pushkar took a small nice room , went for a night walking and slept.

27 th Jan ,

Let me explan about Pushkar .

Pushkar the sister city of Ajmer, is only 11 kms away from the city Pushkar is famous for its fairs and festivals and for Brahma Temple.

LORD BRAHMA TEMPLE : It is said that in a battle Lord Brahma killed the demon Vajra Nabh with a lotus flower whose petals floated down to earth and landed in three places in and Pushkar where Lakes sprang up. the bath at Pushkar is thought to be more important than at any other place. The holy dip in this lake on Kartika Purnima is thought to be salvation giving. Pushkar is very dear to Lord Brahma.

Camel Fair : A colourful and lively fair, it is one of the largest cattle fairs in the country held every year at Pushkar on Kartik Poornima (full moon, October - November) . The 9 day event is considered to be the most striking animal fair in the world. Each year, upto 200,000 people flock to Pushkar for the Camel fair, bringing with them some 50,000 camels and cattle for several days of pilgrimage, live stock trading, horse dealing and spirited festivities. A good camel can fetch tens of thousands of rupees and is a vital source of income for many villagers. This fair is the only one of its kind in the world and has featured in numerous magazines, travel shows and films.

We went to temple n lake , reached “ Radhika Restaurant “ facing Pushkar lake . This is away from busy area , so we preferred that . Evening camel riding , then again night we went to Desert riding . This was totally different experience , traveling in unknown direction . Sun set in desert forced us to take hell lot of snaps.

There we met a person called “ RAMU ” – a camel owner who made nice impression in our mind. Morning we hired his camels . He took us to his sister s house night 11.00 pm ,
Prepared nice rice , aloo gobi , salad etc etc . His sister s place was 6-7 km from pushkar ….. we don t know where !!! He did not take even single paisa for that . He told us many stories , his affair with Manela a lady from California . He was repeatedly saying Hindustani … Hindustani . Seems he likes Hindustani

Jan 28 th ,

It was our last day in Pushkar . we met Ramu and presented him a Shawl , exchanged addresses . after small shopping we left to “Ajaypalji “ . Ajaypalji is a place 15-20 km from Pushkar . Most of the times we were riding on sand , stone . Reached there and left to Jaipur . Night 10.00 pm reached jaipur stayed there .

Jan 29 th,

Morning watched vintage cars rally took few snaps and started to Noida. Reached Noida at 7.00 pm , started preparation for next day in office.....

ORPHANAGE

“….. …. ….. Thomas lost his parents when he was 6 , Sneha don t have mother , her father is tb patient , Archana never seen her parents , Satyawan was working in a road side Dhaba near Chandigadh , John s father is rickshaw puller ……. Etc etc “ these are few lines I heard when I visited orphanage .

There are 22 kids … they don t know what is “FATHER “ & “ MOTHER “ … they don t know the meaning of these words ..
They don t have any relatives …. They missed all care and love from parents ..

When I came to Noida six months back I was searching for such organization , after 2-3 months I met a group of people with such idea . Presently that organization facing financial problems… I hope every thing will be fine in few months . Presently me and Vinay trying to help them in education related expences , We are planning to take extra classes for them during weekdays . Week end we spend time there .
